Port Island Study Tour: Considering the ‘Maritime City of the 21st Century’
What the ‘21st-century maritime city’ set out to become, and where it stands today
On September 3, 2025, ASIBA held a study tour on Port Island in Kobe, together with the Port Island Study Group and Future Style Research Institute (Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate Co., Ltd.). Going forward, ASIBA plans to pursue collaborations aimed at creating new research and demonstration projects on Port Island. As a kickoff, participants — including third-cohort incubation members and young entrepreneurs from the ASIBA ecosystem — took part in an island tour and workshop, exploring the current state and future potential of Port Island. Once an experimental island packed with cutting-edge technology and ideas, Port Island today, 45 years later, shows both a wide range of achievements and challenges. Building on this history, the tour took a broad view of what to aim for next and what to do about it.
