LOVE & TOILET

Restrooms are being discussed and debated in all kinds of places today. In 2023, a gender-neutral restroom was experimentally introduced at Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, only to be discontinued six months later. To me, a restroom is also a comforting space that plays a role beyond relieving oneself — a temporary refuge from the busyness of daily life. This project aims for a society where everyone can receive the benefits of such a restroom, anytime, anywhere. To realize this new kind of restroom, the project pursues both a “conceptual expansion” that updates our fixed ideas about restrooms, and a “formal expansion” that lets conventional restrooms comfortably accommodate a wider range of bodily needs — together shaping what the restroom of the future could be.
