A new kind of smoking space, for smokers and non-smokers alike
A project aiming to enrich smoking spaces in post-COVID Tokyo. The 2020 amendment to the Health Promotion Act and passive-smoking prevention ordinances have sharply restricted smoking spaces in Tokyo, leaving an absolute shortage. Properly numbered and placed smoking areas don't just provide an opportunity to smoke — they also reduce the burden on nearby residents and shops from secondhand smoke and littering caused by smoking on the street. Local government understands this at the ground level, but has few effective options. Why not build, through private-sector effort, a space that's comfortable for smokers and non-smokers alike?
