A new form of architecture × social implementation
To close out ASIBA's first cohort — a two-month incubation program for architecture students — ASIBA held a meetup conference, “ASIBA GROUNDBREAKING 2023,” at NOVARE, Shimizu Corporation's new innovation hub. The theme was “a new form of architecture × social implementation.” Facing increasingly complex social challenges, the day explored how the imaginative power cultivated in architecture and urbanism could carry the futures we envision into real social implementation. Through talk sessions with leading guests, participants shared new architectural methodologies and the honest struggles of young practitioners. At the centerpiece “ASIBA FINAL PITCH,” around fifteen members across eight teams took the stage to present ventures they had conceived through the program — from building-material reuse to AI-driven design services — building a strong foundation, grounded in field testing, for the practice to come.

—Faced with the increasingly complex social challenges in the fields of architecture and urban planning, what can aspiring architects do now?
—What paths exist for translating our visions of the future into reality within society?
ASIBA GROUNDBREAKING 2023 is a one-day conference that explores the mindset needed to give shape to one’s own visions and fosters connections. Through discussions and pitch events, we will seek new forms of social implementation for architecture, armed with the power of imagination cultivated within the fields of architecture and urban planning.

01 “Implementing Architecture in Society: Toward New Architectural Methodologies and Visions of Society”
Speakers: Shuichi Watanabe (Nikken Sekkei), Yohei Shimada (Lion Architects), Tatsuki Shonan (scheme verge), Eri Tsugawa (ALTEMY)
We are beginning to discover increasingly diverse ways to engage proactively with architecture and the city. What does it mean to “implement architecture in society” by harnessing the power of imagination? Together with “implementers”—practitioners on the front lines who are directly addressing this question—we will explore new ways for architecture and society to interact.
02 “Implementing Architecture in Society: The Visions and Realities of Young Practitioners”
Speakers: Urara Takase (omotete), Taito Yamaguchi (SAKIYA), Shoko Ikemoto (ND3M)
From the perspective of young practitioners who are currently walking the path toward implementation—or standing at its very threshold—we will exchange candid, down-to-earth opinions. By discussing both the world they aspire to create and the realities they face today, we hope to spark new possibilities for participating students.

A total of 10 teams presented the work they had been developing over the past 8 weeks in the ASIBA program.
Pitches are not something you often see in architecture. Primarily conducted in business settings, they differ slightly from presentations in design studios. Since they are intended for an audience outside the field—such as investors and clients—the ability to resonate with the audience and be persuasive is crucial. In these pitches as well, each team shared stories centered on their ideas and passions, while also discussing new value propositions and future plans.
