Kaichiku Teiryujo Event Report #1

FIG.1
On October 19, 2025, the third “Muneoroshi” ceremony was held at the former Takashima Seventh Elementary School in Itabashi Ward.As part of the Takashimadaira Upcycling Project—a collaboration between ASIBA, the Itabashi Ward Takashimadaira Community Development Promotion Division, and ReLink LLC (ASIBA PROJECT LABEL)—ASIBA conducted a workshop to explore the potential uses for materials and furnishings from the school building scheduled for demolition and disposal.
Takashimadaira is home to the Takashimadaira Housing Complex, once known as the largest housing complex in East Asia. Takashima Seventh Elementary School, which opened in 1979, has remained unused for a long time since its closure in 2007, but its phased demolition and reconstruction are scheduled to begin next fiscal year. The “Building Farewell Ceremony” is an initiative launched to share memories and create a final opportunity to say goodbye to Takashima Seventh Elementary School. The ceremony will be held over the course of a year in four sessions, with the grand finale taking place on March 14 of next year.

ASIBA and ReLink also participated in the second event held in July, conducting workshops such as dismantling stair railings, archiving memories using the “Memory Camera,” and hands-on furniture-making experiences.

For this third installment, we exhibited upcycled prototypes made from gym wall materials and science lab equipment, and launched an initiative to solicit ideas for reusing scrap materials. We displayed materials and equipment collected from various locations throughout the school and explored new possibilities for upcycling with the participants.

At the workshop venue, it was particularly moving to see former elementary school staff members and alumni delighted to reunite after so long. Engaging with materials and equipment filled with memories provided an opportunity to reflect anew on Takashichi Elementary School’s history and its future.
ASIBA and ReLink plan to hold various workshops during the upcoming fourth installment of the “Mune-shita-shiki” series, which will serve as the grand finale. Additionally, the Takashimadaira Upcycling Project—carried out in collaboration with the Itabashi Ward Takashimadaira Community Development Promotion Division—will continue to strengthen its initiatives moving forward. Please stay tuned for further updates.
